Couple Watching Television

Why does my TV picture freeze or break up?

There’s nothing more frustrating than bad TV reception, especially if you’re trying to watch on a flashy new TV that cost you a small fortune. Whether you’re missing crucial sports action or the big finale in your favourite reality TV show, it can be a real pain.

If we can land men on the moon, we must surely be able to get decent TV reception in this day and age, right? Well, it could be much more simple than you think! Let’s take a look at a few reasons why your TV picture could be breaking up.

3 Reasons why your TV picture could be breaking up

1. Your cables are old

Most people understand that new TV technology means they need new aerials, and millions around the country have swapped their old metal aerial for a satellite dish, but fewer people think about how the pictures get from their receiver to the TV itself.

The television can be as good as you like, and the receiver can be brand new, but if the cables aren’t up to scratch then you’ll still have problems. The most modern cables have four layers of shielding against interference from electrical signals, while older cables have fewer or none at all, so consider upgrading your cables to a newer model.

2. The signal is weak

If you live in a city or town, the chances are that there’s a TV transmitter nearby, but people who live in rural areas or poor signal areas sometimes have to rely on signal carried through several relay towers, and each relay causes the signal to fade a little more.

If this is the case for you, a masthead amplifier could be just what you need to boost it. The amplifier receives the weak signal and gives it more power, transmitting it again so that your TV can receive it.

3. Interference gets in the way

New technology sometimes isn’t compatible with old, and newer appliances might put out electrical signals which interfere with your reception. This can be fixed by simply identifying which device is the problem and replacing it, but some TVs are affected by mobile phone services like 4G, which is a bigger problem.

Luckily, newer TV dishes are shielded against 4G interference, so simply replacing your aerial or dish can stop phone signals from ruining your downtime.
